The KwaZulu-Natal legislature has revealed that amongst those killed in the horrific N3 crash on Tuesday were Pradhil Thakur Kooblall and his fiancée, Priyanka Nundkumar. Thakur Kooblall is the son of Minority Front (MF) leader, Shameen Thakur Rajbansi.

The KZN Legislature shared a message of condolences to the Thakur family.

“We request that we keep Honourable Thakur Rajbansi and her family in our thoughts and prayers during this time of grief. Details of the funeral will be shared as soon as it becomes available,” said Speaker, Nontembeko Boyce.

The two were travelling with two other people whose identities have not been revealed. They all perished when an articulated truck crashed into their vehicle while they were queueing to go to the Mariannhill Toll Gate.

According to the MF’s Viresh Bhana, the couple, who were engaged to be married, were on their way to Durban to attend a party workshop.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. This is a massive blow to the party as both were involved in politics,” Bhana said.

According to Medi Response KZN spokesperson, Paul Herbst, at least six vehicles were involved in the crash.

“A light motor vehicle was swept beneath a truck and was severely damaged, killing four occupants,” Herbst said.

He added that multiple patients were treated at the scene.

Videos of the horrific crash were shared online showing the fire brigade cutting the mangled wreck of the couple’s car.

Meanwhile, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, said it is saddening to hear of this accident.

“Yet again, heavy vehicles are found in the middle of a major accident weeks after the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 18 schoolchildren in Pongola. We had also just concluded the programmes of October Transport Month where we focused our efforts on road safety awareness, yet our messages seem to have fallen on deaf ears. For now, the investigation surrounding the facts of the accident are still minimal but hope that a full report will indicate what happened,” Hlomuka said.

The roadway was obstructed for most of the day.

Two detectives from Chatsworth were injured after they came under attack from a marauding crowd while doing a scene point-out with a murder suspect in Mawelewele settlement near Savannah Park on Friday morning.

The two cops were part of a group of police officers who were performing a scene point-out with the murder suspect when they came under attack.

The pointing-out of crime scenes by a suspect is an important part of the investigation which is done to support confessions and admission. The pointings-out of crime scenes happen when suspects are taken to an alleged crime scene to inform the police about what had happened.

A crowd quickly gathered at the scene and started pelting the SAPS members with stones and bricks as they reportedly tried to free the suspect.

The members were forced to retreat into their vehicles and flee from the crowd. As they fled, the crowd chased after them and continued to stone the vehicles.

Many people wondered how the man managed to get his hands on the guns. Some suggested he might be an owner of a security company or VIP protection services.

The issue of guns in South Africa has been a talking point after the two incidents in a week where tavern patrons were shot while having fun in Soweto and Pietermaritzburg respectively.

Two people have since been arrested in the PMB tavern shooting which claimed 4. It is alleged the two men driving a VW Polo stormed the tavern around 8:30pm and opened fire on patrons.

Experts believe extortion may be behind the two tavern massacres, which saw 19 patrons mowed down during a bloody weekend.

One of the deadly incidents is being labelled as being among the most severe mass shootings in recent years.

Fifteen people were shot dead by gunmen believed to have been firing randomly in a tavern in Nomzamo Park, Soweto, shortly after midnight on Sunday. In Pietermaritzburg, four people succumbed to bullet wounds after two men opened fire after parking their vehicle at a drinking spot in Sweetwaters, at 20:30 on Saturday night.

At least 18 people were killed in two mass shootings at two taverns in Pietermaritzburg and Soweto last night.

A group of gunmen armed with rifles and 9mm pistols opened fire “randomly” after bursting into Lahlamlenze Tavern in Soweto, Gauteng just after midnight.

At least 14 people died in the shooting and ten others have been left injured, with three people fighting for their lives.

Teenagers are among the casualties.

The attackers fled in a white Toyota Quantum minibus.

Horrifying footage posted online shows the bodies of revellers on the floor.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela said: “Primary investigations suggest the people were enjoying themselves in the tavern.

“They just came in and shot at them randomly.”

Mawela added: “All of a sudden they heard some gunshots, that is when people tried to run out of the tavern.

“We don’t have the full details at the moment of what is the motive, and why they were targeting these people.

“You can see that a high caliber firearm was used and it was shooting randomly.

“You can see that every one of those people was struggling to get out of the tavern.”

Detectives are at the scene.

Mawela said the horror shooting happened around 12.30 am this morning.

“Unfortunately, 12 died on the scene and another one died on arrival,” the cop said.

“The 14th [victim] also died after admission.

“The number of cartridges found on the scene indicated it was a group of people who shot at the patrons.”

His detectives said the casualties are aged between 19 and 35, according to ENCA.

Another tavern shooting in KwaZulu Natal

Four people were also killed in a shooting at a Pietermaritzburg tavern in KwaZulu-Natal last night.

Eight others were rushed to hospital.

Two people died at the scene after being gunned down and two others died from their injuries in hospital.

Pietermaritzburg tavern owner speaks

The double horror comes just a fortnight after 21 people died in a “poisoning” at a club in another South African city.

Bodies were found “strewn across tables and chairs” after the tragedy, which happened as students celebrated the end of their exams with a party.

There were “no visible injuries” to the bodies, which were discovered in Enyobeni Tavern in the coastal city of East London.

Early reports suggested the deaths may have been caused by a stampede.

However, the suggestion was quickly ruled out by Unathi Binqose, an Eastern Cape community and safety department official.

“It’s difficult to believe it’s a stampede as there are no visible open wounds to those dead,” he said.

“Parents whose children did not sleep home are gathered here and they want to enter the tavern to look for their loved ones.”

The youngest victim was a 13-year-old girl.

Forensic pathologists have not yet concluded their reports.

However, it’s believed the teens were killed by something they either inhaled or ingested.
