KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thami Ntuli, has announced plans to bolster border security in response to an alarming spike in food poisoning incidents.
Speaking at a special meeting with mayors and municipal managers at the Durban ICC on Friday.
Ntuli emphasized the need for stricter measures to monitor the entry of goods, services, and undocumented individuals into the province.
“We are focusing on enhancing security at all borders to prevent illegal immigration and the infiltration of illicit goods. All items entering the country will be thoroughly inspected,” said Ntuli.
The meeting also addressed the national government’s proposed municipal by-laws, aimed at improving food safety and regulating spaza shop operations.
Unannounced inspections of spaza shops will be conducted to ensure compliance.
Ntuli stressed that these measures are about public safety and not targeting foreigners.
“This is a preventative approach to safeguard communities and ensure that food sold in shops meets safety standards,” he added.
The province is committed to addressing food safety concerns while fostering safe and compliant trade practices.
