Panic gripped shoppers and staff at Hillcrest Centre on Friday afternoon when a heavily armed gang stormed the premises, triggering a violent shootout that left the mall riddled with bullet holes but miraculously no injuries.
According to witnesses and security personnel on scene, two silver and grey Toyota Etios hatchbacks pulled into the parking area shortly before 2pm. Each vehicle was packed with armed suspects wielding pistols and high-calibre rifles, including what appeared to be an AK-47.
“Several men jumped out and told the car guards to drop their radios,” said one security officer, who asked not to be named. “They looked like they knew exactly what they were doing.”
The suspects then moved toward one of the shops in the centre. The store owner, reportedly armed, drew his firearm and attempted to defend his business, sparking a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the gang opened fire from both vehicles, sending shoppers diving for cover. “It was like a war zone — bullets were flying everywhere,” said a bystander who had taken shelter behind a parked car.
After several tense moments, the suspects fled in their vehicles, firing additional rounds as they sped off in different directions.

Emergency services and police responded swiftly, cordoning off the area and collecting spent cartridges strewn across the parking lot.
Police confirmed that no fatalities or injuries were reported despite the heavy gunfire. Investigations are under way to trace the suspects and determine the motive behind the brazen midday attack.
Residents and business owners in the area have expressed shock and concern over the escalating violence in what is typically regarded as a quiet suburb.
