Hijacker Arrested Hours After Robbing Off-Duty Cops

A 34-year-old man was arrested just hours after allegedly hijacking and robbing two off-duty police officers in Avoca Hills, Durban, on Thursday evening.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident, saying the officers, stationed at Greenwood Park police station, were held at gunpoint by a suspect on Courtown Crescent.

“Swift action by a multidisciplinary team, led by the Greenwood Park police station’s Visible Policing Commander, resulted in the arrest of the suspect shortly after the incident,” said Netshiunda.

The operation led police to a house in Newton A, Inanda, where the suspect was apprehended.

During the arrest, officers recovered two firearms belonging to the hijacked officers along with 30 rounds of ammunition.

A further search uncovered two additional unlicensed firearms and 12 rounds of ammunition. The stolen vehicle was also recovered.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 18, 2024, to face charges of hijacking and robbery.

In a related case earlier this week, KwaZulu-Natal police foiled a carjacking syndicate targeting e-hailing vehicles in Durban’s CBD.

Acting on intelligence, police arrested suspects in Newlands West after intercepting their plans along Inanda Road.
