Football fans in KZN are gearing up for a spectacular sports extravaganza as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs prepare to clash with top Indian clubs in a highly anticipated double-header at Moses Mabhida Stadium later this month.

The event, aptly named the “Connect Tournament”, is not just a football match but a cultural exchange that promises to showcase thrilling football skills and promote mutual understanding.

The tournament has been scheduled just three days after Bafana Bafana’s final AFCON Group E match against Tunisia in Ivory Coast.

The event also coincides with a six-week break in the PSL and a pause in the Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League due to the AFC Asian Cup.

Orlando Pirates will kick off the event with a challenging match against Mohammedan Sporting, a venerable club from Kolkata and current leaders of the I-League.

Founded in 1891, Mohammedan Sporting stands as one of the oldest football institutions in India.

The second game will feature Kaizer Chiefs going head-to-head against Sreenidi Deccan. Known for their partnership with Portuguese club Benfica, Sreenidi Deccan currently holds the third position in the I-League.

This match offers Amakhosi an excellent opportunity to refine their strategy for the upcoming second round of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Tickets for this double-header are priced at R80, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of football enthusiasts.

More than a sporting event, this tournament represents a significant cultural bridge, enhancing mutual respect and appreciation between South African and Indian traditions.

Anticipation is high for this unique football celebration, with a sell-out crowd expected, thanks to the passionate support for both Pirates and Chiefs.

Organisers’ Vision and Impact

Sibaphiwe Khanyile, CEO of Niniva Capital, along with Bhattacharjee, spearheads the organisation of the Connect Tournament.

Speaking to FARPost, Khanyile highlighted the long-term planning and dedication behind this initiative, which began as a response to the July 2021 riots in KZN.

The goal is to unite the community through football and establish an annual event featuring more teams from the BRICS nations.

The Connect Tournament is set to have a substantial economic impact. Plans include facilitating trade fairs in India for South African industries, under the same initiative.

The KZN government eagerly anticipates the economic and tourism benefits this groundbreaking event promises to deliver.
